BiteBook Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 11, 2026
Overview
BiteBook is a personal food journal. We don't run servers, don't collect your data, and don't sell or share anything. Everything stays on your device and, optionally, your personal iCloud account.
Data We Collect and Why
Your meal journalEverything you log — dishes, restaurants, photos, ratings, notes — is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. If you enable iCloud Sync in Settings, this data is synced to your private iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit. We never see it.
PhotosPhotos you take or import are stored with your meal entries. They never leave your device except through iCloud Sync (your account) or when you explicitly share them using the system share sheet.
LocationBiteBook uses your location to suggest nearby restaurants when logging a meal. If you enable the "Arrive & log" feature in Settings, the app uses background location to detect when you arrive at restaurants you've visited before and sends you a local notification. Your location is never transmitted to us or any third party. Weather data is fetched via Apple's WeatherKit service, which is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
ContactsIf you tag a dining companion on a meal, BiteBook accesses your contacts to let you pick a name. Contact data is used only to populate the companion field on that meal and is never stored beyond what you explicitly save.
On-device AI (PlateSense)On iOS 26 and later, BiteBook uses Apple's Foundation Models framework to analyze food photos and generate journal copy. All processing happens entirely on your device. No photos, text, or any other data are transmitted to our servers or Apple's servers for this feature.
NotificationsBiteBook may send you local notifications — daily reminders, "Arrive & log" alerts, "On This Day" memories, and monthly recaps. These are generated entirely on-device using your journal data. No notification content is sent to or processed by external servers.
Data We Do Not Collect
• We have no servers or backend infrastructure
• We collect no analytics or usage data
• We use no third-party advertising or tracking SDKs
• We do not create user accounts
• We do not have access to your journal, photos, or any personal information
Third-Party Services
BiteBook uses the following Apple-provided services, each governed by Apple's own privacy policy:
• iCloud / CloudKit — optional journal sync
• WeatherKit — local weather display
• Apple Maps — restaurant search and map display
• Foundation Models — on-device AI (iOS 26+)
Data Retention and Deletion
Your data lives on your device. To delete everything, delete the app. If iCloud Sync is enabled, you can also delete the app's iCloud data from Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.
ChildrenBiteBook does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children under 13.
ChangesIf we update this policy, we'll update the date above. Since we collect no data, meaningful changes are unlikely.
